Ndugu Mdogo Rescue Centre (ndugu mdogo in kishwahili means small brother) is an initiative of the Koinonia Community and it is based in Kibera, one of the largest and most difficult slums in Nairobi. Here some wocial workers follows the rehabilitation program of the young guests of the centre, starting from the very first contact in the street up to one year hosting; after one year, the children are assigned to some permanent guest centres (Kivuli, Ndugu Mdogo Kerarapon), or they may be re-allocated in their original families.

The Ndugu Mdogo Rescue centre launched operations in September 2005 with the following aims and objectives:
to promote street interventions and youth empowerment
programmes: Ndugu Mdogo social workers identify children living on the
street, and proceed to organize street activities with them as a prelude to a fostering
process that gradually moulds them into sound members of the society
to support child rescue initiatives: the centre responds to
emergencies resulting from street violence, disease, exploitation and drugs-related
issues; the centre can accommodate up to ten children for emergencies like sickness,
abuse by adults and immediate danger
to provide in-house care, support and rehabilitation of children in
need: for each child a support program is defined, providing hope through the
satisfaction of their primary needs, like a house, counseling, talent development,
formation and self-understanding
to initiate effective community and parent empowerment
systems
to network and create awareness on street problems and the
rights of children.

The program is fitted on a max number of 20 children hosted for one year, living in a small house in Kibera with some rooms with bunking beds, common kitchen, living room, toilets and garden; some girls from the area help Jack, the enthusiastic responsible person for the centre, for food preparation and house management, but nevertheless this is
under children’s responsibility.
The Centre also provides a base for academic research on street life,
which is carried out with support from various universities.
How to help
Best way to support Ndugu Mdogo Rescue is to go and visit: the very warm welcome of both the children and Jack will let you spend an unforgettable day, and for these children coming from the street it is a great personal satisfaction to know that there is someone taking a plane to come here in Kibera!
Moreover every year Amani Onlus organizes a Summer work camp, usually during the first three weeks in August, involving around 15 Italian young volunteers together with the children hosted in Ndugu Mdogo.
On the contrary if you wish to economically help the centre activities you may make a donation, through Amani Onlus, the Italian ngo supporting the projects of the Koinonia Community.
